BF3 Open Beta

DICE has opened up the Battlefield 3 Beta to the general public. It requires the installation of the Origin client, which fortunately is very lightweight. Once installed, go to the Store tab of Origin and click the 'Free Games' link to find the BF3 Beta. I've had access to the early beta and I've uploaded two HD Videos to give you a feel for the general atmosphere and gameplay at Ultra settings (excuse the noob skills). The BF3 Beta Caspian Border Video shows off the beautiful Caspian Border Conquest mode map - unfortunately this map has restricted access in the beta. The BF3 Beta Metro Video highlights the Rush mode Metro map which everyone can play in the beta. BF3 is a cross between BFBC2 and BF2, and as expected from a beta, is a bit glitchy at the moment, but has a lot of potential and is certainly quite immersive. I've been informed by a reliable source that Ultra graphics is included in the Beta despite rumors to the contrary, and note that you need to restart the game each time you change a graphics setting for it to be implemented properly. It's because of this restart requirement that a proper tweak guide for the game can't be compiled using the Multiplayer-only beta; I'll be doing one for the final version of BF3, which is due out on 25 October. The beta closes on 10 October.

AMD has released the official Catalyst 11.9 graphics driver for the HD 2000 series and above. The changes in this WHQL certified driver include support for HD3D on DisplayPort panels, as well as a range of bug fixes.

Nvidia has released the Beta 285.38 driver for Windows XP, Vista and 7. This driver is for GeForce 6 and higher desktop cards. It is specifically designed to improve performance in the upcoming Battlefield 3 game. It also contains new SLI profiles for several games, as well as a performance fix for Crysis 2 DX9. The driver package also contains the 9.11.06.21 PhysX drivers.
AMD Catalyst 11.10 Preview

AMD has released the Catalyst 11.10 Preview graphics driver for Windows 7. This driver is specifically designed to improve performance in the upcoming Battlefield 3 game on the HD 5000 and HD 6000 series. It also enables support for Eyefinity 5x1 and enhances the user interface.

A quick update to let you know that the HDTV Guide I mentioned earlier has been completed. The guide is lengthier than I had anticipated, and covers a large number of related topics. I'm in the process of formatting it and adding appropriate pictures, but it should be up here within a week.
