Windows 8 Released

Microsoft has publicly released the final retail version of Windows 8. It comes in three editions: Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro, and Windows RT. The differences in editions are shown in a chart in this article. If you're currently running Windows XP, Vista or 7, you can purchase the download-only upgrade edition of Windows 8 Pro for $39.99 in most countries, or a DVD copy of Windows 8 Pro Upgrade for $69.99. The download-only version can be saved as an ISO file for later use, and also allows a clean install - details of exactly how the upgrade works are in this article. You can also get the upgrade for $14.99 if you purchased a Windows 7 PC after 2 June 2012.
Update: Keep in mind that Windows 8 is steadily being released around the world in different time zones, so it may not be available for your region just yet. If the $39.99 upgrade purchase link above doesn't work for you, you can either use this Microsoft Store link and select Windows on the main page, or download and run the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant to initiate the upgrade purchase.

Nvidia has released the Beta 310.33 graphics driver. This driver is for GeForce 8 and higher desktop cards under Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8. It contains performance improvements for the 400, 500 and 600 series, updated SLI, 3D Vision and Ambient Occlusion profiles, and bug fixes. The driver package also contains the 9.12.0604 PhysX drivers.

AMD has released the official Catalyst 12.10 graphics driver for the HD 5000 series and above under Windows Vista, 7 and 8. It provides full support for WDDM 1.2, takes advantage of various new Windows 8 optimizations and features, and adds Enduro support for notebooks. The driver also has a range of bug fixes.

With Windows 8 due for retail release next week, I've almost completed the TweakGuides Tweaking Companion for Windows 8. However it still won't be released until December due to a range of factors. One is the large amount of editing needed to polish the book. Another is that I'm doing two major game guides for Nvidia back-to-back in November. Finally, I also want to be sure that I include any new tips or useful utilities which appear in the first hectic month after Windows 8's public release. I'd rather get the book right than try to rush it out just to capitalize on the Windows 8 release hype. As with the previous TGTC releases, there will be a free version and a Deluxe Edition available.

It is recommended for Borderlands 2 and WoW: Mists of Pandaria, and adds new SLI and 3D Vision profiles. The driver package also contains the 9.12.0604 PhysX drivers.

Nvidia has released the 306.89 WHQL certified graphics driver. This driver is only for the new GeForce GTX 650 Ti card under Windows Vista, 7 and 8. For Windows XP, a separate 306.81 driver has been released for the GeForce GTX 650 Ti.
