Microsoft has released a new version of the Security Update which had recently caused font rendering issues and/or crashes on some systems. The new update is applicable to all Windows Vista, 7 and 8 systems, including those which had kept the earlier version installed, and is available via Windows Update.

Google has released Version 37.0.2062.94 of the Chrome browser. This version adds DirectWrite support for improved font rendering, new apps/extension APIs, stability and performance improvements, as well as providing security and bug fixes.

A new Version 4.17.4808 of the free CCleaner system cleaning utility has been released. Changes include Chrome and Opera GPU cache cleaning, improved Chrome and Opera download history cleaning, improved Firefox and Chrome startup items detection, along with a range of minor improvements and bug fixes.

Microsoft has released Autoruns 12.02, updating this free startup software identification utility. This version fixes a startup crash bug, updates the image path parsing for Installed Components to remove false positive file-not-found entries, and correctly reports image entry timestamps in local time instead of UTC.

AMD Catalyst 14.7 RC3

AMD has released the Catalyst 14.7 RC3 graphics driver for the HD 5000 series and above on Windows 7 and 8.1. This release candidate improves 4K monitor performance and reduces flickering on the R9 290, R9 270 and HD 7800 series, and contains single and multi-GPU enhancements for Lichdom and Watch Dogs, along with CrossFire support for Wildstar.

Windows 8.1 August Update

Microsoft has released the August Update for Windows 8.1, formerly anticipated as Windows 8.1 Update 2. The main changes include precision touchpad improvements, out-of-date ActiveX control blocking in IE, Miracast Receive capability, and minimizing login prompts for SharePoint Online. It is available as an optional update via Windows Update, or from the link above.

Microsoft has announced that rather than releasing a Windows 8.1 Update 2 as was widely expected, it will simply release minor updates each month via Windows Update. Thus the August Update for Windows 8.1, available on 12 August, will only contain the following new features: Precision touchpad improvements, Miracast Receive, and Minimizing login prompts for SharePoint Online.
