Site Update

7 April 2019

I don't keep up with gaming news much these days, but today I learned of the early access for The Elder Scrolls: Blades, a mobile-only Elder Scrolls game. I registered a free Bethesda.net account, downloaded the 1.2GB game on my iPhone, and minutes later, was marvelling at just how far mobile gaming has come. A brief sample I recorded from the first part of the game shows impressive, smooth, immersive graphics, somewhere in between Oblivion and Skryim - games that blew gamers away a decade ago and had them scrambling to upgrade their PCs just to get something resembling playable framerates with decent eye candy. Now we're doing it on our phones! Of course, it quickly becomes apparent that it's a relatively simple linear game designed primarily to foist microtransactions and pay-to-win onto players. But look past that, and the potential for proper gaming on mobiles is obvious.
